Evaluation task 2 - the effectiveness of out combination of our main product and ancillary texts

when creating our magazine and film poster we found it important to keep to a certain theme/ design most of our filming is done in black and white because we thought this would work well with the genre weve chosen being horror.
Both poster and magazine have the same feature picture of our main character and killer stood in a dark small alley way with his face coverd in complete darkness, the only things seeming to stand our being his white tshirt there and there is also a similar shot used in our main film. I found this picture to be effective because it gives off the impression of someone thretening, our man is stood in the center of our picture wich is something i picked up in research allthough mainly with the magazine cover. most film magazine covers showing horror films have there main protagonist placed centeral in the picture standing square on the the viewers in a posture that holds no restrictions.and verry often there face is coverd or there hands are tied in front of them. For our magazine cover our main villan is placed in the same way how ever we thought that in keeping his face in darkness we thought this would make him seem more intimidating as opposed to having his hands tied wich in some peoples eyes may actually make him look a little vunerable. both poster and magazine are also verry dark wich conforms to our genres stereotype.
The film poster allthough being the same as the image used for the magazine is actually a little brighter giving it an illuminated effect we decided to use this effect to make our picture stand out more. the posture in wich our character stands reminds me personally of the character 'grim reaper' or possibly the main character 'scar face' in the scream movies again another film about a phsycopath who goes round killing his close friends and family how ever he is in full costume and and also masked.
The font used on both magazine poster and trailer is verry similar allthough the one used on our magazine is a little bolder I chose todo this again because of research the colouring I made simple however the main heading empire is in its more often than not trade mark colour red along with my main feature heading for the film, I chose the colour red because it stood out against the darker back ground and also works well with presenting the genre. the font of the poster was done as a white outline because we thought this worked well with the colour sceme and evidently when we previewed it in red font it made it dificult to read and again we wanted to keep it simple because we wanted our feature picture to do most of the advertising rather than the headings. The idea for this was for the main picture to become something used to identify our film.
Through being a fans of the genre weve chosen to work with i feel that each one of oure texts will apeal efectively to our target audience and draw them to our film obsession, I feel that by not giving out too much information about our film through poster images and magazine covers and our trailer it will help give our film a more mysterious feel about it something i also got from the way the first paranormal activity was previewed to its viewers, even thought a minimal amount of information was shown apart from a couple of key moments people were still interested to see this movie to see what it comes out with im hoping our texts will have the same effect for obsession.

evaluation task 3 what we have learned from our audience feedback

From looking back through our audience feedback ive realised our strengths within this piece were our variety of shots through out the trailer especially the shot of our character reaching for the knife in his kitchen draw this was a shot leading up to a key moment in our film so by constantly flicking back to parts of this event in our trailer we felt that it would hilight this fact and by speeding it up and making the shots short it would make the audience focus more on this part.

Another thing pointed out about our trailer was our use of effect with the black and white screen our audience felt this conformed to the horror film stereo type wich was also the reason we chose this effect a similar black and white effect was used in Alfred Hitchcoks Phsyco. Our audience also found that our genre was easily identified with another strength being our music.

when creating our trailer we wanted the music to help tell the story we were producing and our film didnt allways start of with a phsyco on the loose so for the beggining of our trailer we chose a calm style of music produced by the sound of a guitar we thought this would be sutable for the begining of the trailer because it shows the begining of a harmless relationship the sound of the guitar sets of a peacefull setting. as our trailor moves on the music progresses to a more uneasy and louder sound this sound was chosen to represent our genre horror .

from this feedback i also realised our weakneses one being background noise through out some of our early shots in the begining of the trailer something that we could have eddited out when puting in the music. another was our choice of font for our screen titles and our main title for our film to make our trailer better we could have chosen a bolder font to make our title stand out and conform to the genre and other horror films. Finally the speed our some of our screen titles were a bit too fast wich made it hard for the audience to see the names our the actors in our trailer in future we could slow them down so that they are easier to be seen and also fit in with the music.

Evaluation task 4 how we used media technologies in the construction and research and planning and evaluation stages

Windows Movie Maker

instead of using adobe premiere elements to put together our trailer we chose to use Windows movie maker, we made this decision because we thought it would be easier to work on our task as I had it downloaded on my laptop and had previously worked with it. this worked well because we never had any problems with uploading wich proved to be a problem when using adobe in the past however we did run in to some complications with putting in titles allthough this was easily overcome and ended up being done fine.

Tripod

To help control our camera during a couple of our filming scenes we used a Tripod
if we hadn't have used one of theses our shots would have been harder to film and wouldn't have appeared as steady as they were when we used one

Camera
to film our trailer we used a camera like this. Originally we were offerd to use one of the schools personal ones but because there was such a high demand with those cameras with different groups needing to use them at the same time we figured that it would be easier and better to just use one of our own because that way we wouldn't have to chose the times we wanted to film so that it worked when other members of our class needed to do theirs

During the process of making our trailer we also used a couple of other resources these were:

YouTube

We used youtube ot help upload things like our trailer reasearch back ay the beggining and for things like our animatic and ideas on film title fonts we also used it to upload our film to our blog once it was completed.

Photo Shop

Photo Shop was used to create things such as our films poster and our magazine cover however i came into a couple of problems when using photo shop at home to create our empire cover as i was unable to upload or send it to another email to upload in school.

Google

Finally Google was the standard search engine used to help find images for our research and planning and to find non copywright music to download for our trailer.

Evaluation task 1 in what ways did our media product use, develope or challenge conventions of a horror films

This is one of the first images shown at the beggining of our trailer this is one of the two shots taken that are there to show the viewers that our characters are in a happy relationship together, these are also our main characters. The title of the film is obsession. by showing this image it shows that the begining of there relationship started of as any normal relationship would and also shows a harmless normal side to our male character who turns out to be an 'obsessive' killer. the music we uses during the first couple of shots is verry peacfull and bright this sets of a chilled happy mood before everything goes wrong. i believe this is the kind of effect used in horror films showing obsessive characters similar to the trailer for the film the roommate another film about a character becoming overly obsessive with there friend to the point it becomes dangerous.

Here is a screen grab of one of the first moments things start to go wrong with out characters the shot shows an argument turning slightly physical when our characters start to swear and shove eachother agressively how ever this shot shows our femal character appearing to be the agressive one even though shes just trying to defend her self. this shot also contains most of our limmited script. shortly after this scene is where the argument backfires and our male character played by ricky self, pushes into his onscreen girlfriend backing her towards the otherside of the room.

This is a long shot of our male character angrilly walking down a hall walk in his flat
and hitting a door with his fist showing his anger and frustration most of the shots taken for our film feature our male character the idea of this is to show our viewers how he changes through ou the film and slowly looses his mind.

This is the production company weve chose to use for our trailer 'HAMMER' productions because they have worked with quite a few horror/thriller films another choice was ghost hour pictures but it had previously been used in other coursework and was also less popular.

This is one of my personal favourite shots taken or our trailer i allways find that clever over the shoulder shots work well with horror/thriller movies and that is important the include them when making one because it sets of the un easy mood of someone being watched from a far. the setting from behind him in the room is dark and eary wich gives of a thretening feel and shows he doesnt want to be seen it also shows his unhappy mood where as ourside is bright and shows a completely different mood of happiness with the two characters walking completely oblivious to the fact they are both being watched by a jelous phsyco.

This is a long shot taken of all three of our characters as you can see in front we have our main female walking hapily with her new boyfriend and in the background at the bottom of the alley we have our murderer stood watching i think this shot is verry effective because it showsa how our character trully is obbsessed and they dont know hes behind them wich gives an uncomfortable 'whats he going to do' feel to the trailer.

Through out our trailer there is one scene that is constantly refered back to the scene is of our main guy walking in to a kitchen oppening a door and taking out a knife through our our trailer this scene is cut up in to tiny parts and played at high speed giving th effect of a 'flashback' also showibng the audience that this is a key moment for our trailer leaving the aundience watching closely to see what happening the scene eventualy slows to a more clear view of our character with the knifebefore it skips to the scene above with him standing down the alley.

This is our last shot of the main character in our trailer i like this shot not only because it shows a clear desturbing apmosphere with him sitting alone in the dark playing one note on his guitar it also fits in with our theme of music in the begining of the trailer the happy sound of the guitar resulting in him playing alone at the end. The note he plays sounds un easy and broken just like him i also think the light behind him origionally scourcing from white noise on a television works well with the scene too giving the scene around him a glowy look.

This is the final clip in our trailer showing the name of our film OBSESSION.
We chose to use the colour red for out title because it conotates death blood and fear key things needed in a horror film the font is verry plane but bold wich we liked for our trailer but judging our previous audience feedback it was one of the things we could of improved for our trailer to make it more effective

Magazine cover analysis

The company we are going to use to produce our magazine cover is Empire Magazine. Empire is a very popular and well known British film magazine and we feel that due to that using empire will be most effective at advertising and getting people interested in our film.

This is the cover used for the advertisement of the film The Dark Night. On this cover the main feature placed in the center is of the joker, the joker is the main Villon in this film like this poster our aim is to feature our killer in the center of the page the Villon is positioned facing directly towards the viewers all though his head is slightly facing down with his eyes looking up giving him a threatening presence this again is something we plan on using in our magazine poster.

The colours used in this image are all very bright and are colour coded to fit the character, our cover is going to be in black and white so we will most likely use colours to fit our colour scheme. The heading as usual with this magazine is written in capitals with bold font and is coloured a bright shade of red, we are going to keep this the same for our cover because it will have a good effect against our much darker background and also co notates blood and death.

This is the cover used for star trek into darkness like the previous cover for batman again the main feature is the Villon in the film and is also positioned facing the viewers but with his face positioned as though he's slightly looking up at the camera having characters positioned this way especially the Villon's is very common with magazine advertisement because it gives off a more threatening perception of the character. even if your not sure on the character being shown you can often tell what there role in the film may be.

The colours used in this cover are very different to the ones used in my first analysis. the back ground colour is very neutral with a misty effect rising from the bottom of the image around the character who is dressed in very dark relatively ordinary clothing. again the font used for the cover is very bold and presented in capitals. The main colour for the font is again a bright shade of red common with this magazine and con notates danger.

Im not to familiar with the film of which this image belongs to but it is significantly different to the ones i have previously looked at the cover features a close up on a woman's face. the colours used for this cover are also very different to my previous analasys the backgroud of the cover is completely white wich alows the main picture of the girl to stick out the character is splattered with blood across her face and covered on her neck the brightness of the red stands out effectively against the white

this isn't likely to be something we use for our cover because we aren't using a close up of our character instead our aim is to have him standing in darkness with his identity unrevealed and to have him standing in a threatening position.

again the font style is similar to the others maintaining the bold writing and the red colour scheme which is something were planning on sticking with.

This is our final analysis for the magazine empire the feature for this cover is the main creature from the film locked in which isn't a film i'm all too familiar with again like some of my previous magazines i chose this because the character is positions in the center of the page holding a similar position to the others which is what we are planning to do for our magazine cover.

the colours used for this poster are very dark and basic there is so real complicated element to the design the character is wearing a a black coat hi-lighting the pale skin seen on its face the contrast of the black on white is something we are going to use for out cover. the background is coloured a deep maroon red making the character seem more like a shilloette. The font style like the others is still bold and the heading has been kept the same bright red colour standing out on the cover.

As i couldnt get my trailer on to adobe i had to do them on windows movie make. I dont think they looked too bad but they didnt have the effect i was looking for.

Poster - Texas chainsaw massacre

The poster for Texas chainsaw massacre shows a man with a chainsaw walking away. I think this is very effective as this is not the first Texas chainsaw massacre film and the old films were very well known. The film doesn’t show a lot but it doesn’t need to because a lot of the audience will know the old films and will want to see it through association.

The poster uses very dark titles and features in a remote setting. The font used is a very similar colour to the colour scheme. It stands out because it has a glow effect. The poster looks dull and old compared to the other posters this may be linked in with the older movies or that its based on a true story.
This is my favourite one so far as this is the one that affects me most personally and i think this would be the kind of thing i would produce for my trailer seeing as my trailer is also based in a remote area with no one around i would probably choose to have a shilloette of my killer in the back ground and have the group of teenagers in my trailer featured in the foreground of the picture, by placing the killer in the background suggests the element of a nasty surprise they know he’s out there but don't know where he’s hiding

Poster - The Roommate

The poster for the roommate features 2 girls and a boy.  One of the girls is standing very close to the boy suggesting there together. The other girl is standing on her own. The girls are both looking in the direction of the other girl, this suggest a rivalry between the two girls. the girl stood on her own is shown to be the threatening one out of the two as she is shown in a red light, suggesting she’s evil and the other girl seems to be protected by the boy or looking for that protection.

The title suggests that they are in a college or university and that the two girls are roommates. The poster doesn’t give much else away to the viewer about the film. The audience knows it’s a horror film due to the dark lighting and use of red lighting and title.

Poster - Paranormal Activity

The poster for paranormal activity shows a man and woman on the bed, this might be a scene from the film. The female is pointing toward the door where there is a shadow. In the poster it looks like night time and it’s done in a home video style layout as the poster shows a man and woman in a bedroom I’m guessing the story is set inside their home. Due to the title and the shadow on the door I’m guessing that there home is being haunted but a ghost or demon.

The film title is against a black background and uses a red colour to stand out which connotes death and blood which fits in to the genre of the film. The film caption what happens when u sleep fits in very well with the picture on the poster this shows that the poster is defiantly from night time and is being film while the characters are sleeping.

The poster is very simple and is probably more reliant on the trailer rather than the poster to bring audiences in as it is hard to portray ghost/demons in a poster.

Poster - last house on the left

The film poster for the last house on the left uses black for the majority of the back ground. The house is surrounded by a white back ground that looks like a light. It makes the house look like a Shilloette. The house also looks abandoned and creepy as the light from the back makes it look like there is mist surrounding the house.

The title of the house is in bold font with all the words in white except ‘house’ which is in blood red and covered in blood splats. This insinuates the house is dangerous. The title takes up half of the poster and has very strong connotations on its own.

I think this poster is very simple but very effective. The way they highlighted the word house and having a picture of a house at the bottom makes me think that most of the action is happening in the house.

‘If bad people hurt someone you love how far would you go to hurt them back.’ This is the quote at the bottom of the poster this suggest that the story involves a group of friend or a family. As there isn’t a person on the front cover to draw audiences in, I think they have kept it simple so the audiences imagination can fill in the blanks

Costume ideas male characters

My first male character is going to have a personality to meet the first females, he is going to be verry cocky, verry interested in the way he looks and up for winding up everyone! the complete oposite to his best friend the second male character in my trailer he is going to be more layed back and wants to look out for his friends where as his friend is more interested in scaring the girls and winding the quieter one up.

Costume ideas for Female characters

When i get round to filming things for my trailer its not going to be the height of summer and the majority of my filming will also be done in the evening so my characters arent going to be dressed in summary clothing .

  • One of my female characters is how ever going to be dressed verry 'girlie' her personality is going to be verry 'self centerd' and vain. to elabourate on this personality im going to dress her in diferent kind of clothes to my second female character as i would like her to stand out. shes on an outdoor camping trip she wont look like thats what shes dressed for where as my other female character will come across as more down to earth and relaxed she will be dressed in more cassual clothes fit for the activity they are doing, she will also be wearing more dull colours compared to the other character. both of these girls are characterised to be the complete oposite of eachother and there for find it verry hard to get along with eachother!

  • Warner bro's pictures is another popular film institution and has produced allot of my personally favourite slightly old films but as much as i do favour this production company they would be the ones i would be least likely to use as part of my trailer because i don't believe that it fits in with the whole horror/thriller genre that I'm going to be working on. Films produced by this company are:
The Harry potter films

Lionsgate is a Canadian film company. In 2007, it became the most commercially successful independent film company in North America. They produce and distribute motion pictures, television programmes, home entertainment and family entertainment

Some of the biggest films lionsgate have produced are: kick ass, religulous, forbidden kingdom, Rambo, the bank job and Tyler Perry’s Medea goes to jail, which generated $41 million in the opening weekend.

Lionsgate mainly produce thriller, action, drama and horror. Some of the horrors they have produced are: saw 1/2/3/4/5/6, saw 3D, the last exorcism and my bloody valentine.

After researching lionsgate I realised that horror was not their strongest points when making or distributing. Therefore I don’t think I will choose this institution to create my horror film as I don’t think they have enough experience in creating successful and memorable horror films.

In the 1970, Hammer made few horror films as they were going out of fashion. In 2000 they remerged and released just under a dozen films over the years. In 2009 the announced they had teamed up with alliance films and were remaking the woman in black.

Hammer productions have produce some amazing horror movies including Let Me In, The Resident and Wake Wood. This is why I would like Hammer productions to produce my film. As I think they have a very strong profile in horror and would the best institution to make and distribute my film.
